Nicéphore Niépce

Nicephore Niepce is known as one of the inventors of photography and a pioneer in the photography field. His earliest nature pictures were taken with a camera obscura.

He was known for the image above, also known as View from the Window at Le Gras. It's known as the first successful permanent photograph. The image is also Nicephore Niepce's earliest photograph taken with a camera obscura. The photo was taken in 1826, at his family's country home in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes. It took Nicephore Niepce 8 hours to make the exposure. The photograph is now on display in the main lobby at Harry Ransom Humanities Center.
